I became certified with the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC) in 2012. Certifications like this offer one of the most important things any business owner desires: access. Access to supplier diversity executives at major corporations, as well as federal and state government entities. This certification provided an abundance of networking opportunities and access to professionals I never would have met otherwise.
It’s important to understand that once you’re certified, you need to learn how to navigate your certification. For instance, I didn’t get a book of business handed to me, I simply got more opportunities to connect with corporations and to earn their business.
Through navigating this certification, I created a successful strategy that, to date, has landed my company, VMG Studios, many new master service agreements (contracts) and vendor numbers with major enterprise corporations including Amazon, Ericsson, Fifth Third Bank, Google, Meta, Microsoft, Starbucks, T-Mobile, and Twitter.
Getting certified as a women-owned company is not a goal, it's the first step to begin a dialogue with your dream clients. For more information about how to work with corporate supplier diversity professionals, go to the resources page.
